The Playlist archives

In an attempt to keep you all entertained on a creative level, we have asked a bunch of serious music lovers in our circle of new and old friends to compose a playlist with some of their favourite tunes.

Refresh your musical knowledge, have that ‘Aha-moment’ of that long-forgotten tune, be inspired to break with those pre-composed playlists proposed by your music streaming partner. Let’s connect through the music, there’s no need to keep distance there!

The first edition is a playlist by Carlos van Hijfte. You might know Carlos from our blog interview from a while ago. Or as one of the models in our Recollection campaign. We ‘sat down’ with Carlos and asked him about his life and his musical adventures.

Carlos was born in the 1950s on a farm in Zeeland, a southern coastal province of The Netherlands. ‘Off-grid’ was not a choice back then. Carlos spends his first years on the farm without electricity or sewage system out of poverty. When the family moved to another farm with electricity in the 60s, he got his first record player. ‘Street Fighting Man’ by the Rolling Stones was the first 7 inch he owned. Dylan, Hendrix, The Who…from that moment on music had definitively entered his life. In the late 70s, he opened record store Bullit in Eindhoven. (Read an interview with Carlos and other locals about a Joy Division show around that time here.)

In Eindhoven, Carlos worked for venue Effenaar for 5 years, programming bands in the early 80s, a time dominated by the post-punk and new / no wave music. “A dream coming true”, Carlos says about this job. “Most of the playlists’ tracks are from this era”.

“I befriended New York noise collective Sonic Youth, who ask me to become their tour manager for the 1986 US tour. After my touring adventures with Sonic Youth, I quit working for Effenaar. Double You / Mojo concerts offered me a table and a telephone, and I started to book bands both nationally and internationally. I worked with many, many artists and was one of the founders of the Lowlands Festival. In the early 2000s, I left Mojo. I proceeded to arrange tours from my kitchen table. Mostly for befriended artists such as Sonic Youth, Cat Power, Shellac, Blonde Redhead, Dinosaur jr, Mike Watt. After Sonic Youth’s breach, I decided to call it quits. 38 years of booking bands and managing tours came to an end. These last years I’m involved in a couple of Rotterdam cultural initiatives, such as WORM, De Ronde van Katendrecht (Round of Katendrecht) and I participate as a ‘Rotterdamse Douwer‘. Helping youngsters give them ‘a nudge’ where needed.

For our second playlist, we have asked RealCrazyland, aka Leon van Barneveld to collect some of his favourite tunes for us. When asking Leon about his life at the moment, he states;

“This playlist is as hectic as the world nowadays. Something old, something new, and some different styles, which felt good combining them. By the way, now everybody is used to the different presenters every night at Op 1, right?-
Okay: the playlist is made by a guy who would describe his day time job as “social business” and life in general as “diverse”. But he is always open for other suggestions.”

Our third playlist is composed by Nicole Martens. Nicole used an interesting angle, compiling her list. All artists she selected are living, performing and recording now.

Nicole about this playlist: “This selection departed from personal admiration and support for independent artists, producers and labels. Especially for performing artists who see their income disappear in these times of quarantine where festivals, DJ gigs and live shows are being cancelled. Their future remains uncertain, and I have an urge to support this valuable community. It makes sense that the past few weeks (re)releases, online performances, and merch have been overflowing my inbox and social media feeds.

As a music lover and DJ, Spotify or Apple Music has not been my go-to up until now. My music input comes from a wide variety of online radio stations, web-travels, record-stores and through friends, the grapevine…. In DJ-sets, live and in my radio shows, I think in compositions, just like my visual work. I do play and pick from preference, but the ‘concept’ prevails. For this list, I aimed for a contemplative and stimulating soundtrack while inspiring the listener to explore new directions outside of the list and commercial streaming platforms. As goes for many things, we are grateful for what they bring into the world, we need to show love, appreciation and act on it if we’re able. Therefore I’ve only selected artists in my playlist who are on Bandcamp where their music and more stuff is for sale. Note that not all (new) releases are on Spotify of Apple Music, so please explore and support when you can. Unable to be all-inclusive, I kept the ‘algorithmic’ and ‘linked-in’ range in mind. So, listen, enjoy, contemplate, go on and wander, search for radio shows, cloud mixes, profiles, recorded performances and wish-lists artists for future performances.
Tip for the reader and listener: during COVID times, Bandcamp occasionally doesn’t charge extra commission. 100% of the benefits go to the artist. To buy is to support!

Our fourth and fifth Playlists are composed by Jeroen Rozendaal, also known under the name Studio Rev.

Jeroen is an admirer of many genres. Decades ago, he introduced us to genres such as Kraut, Synth, Goth and wave, to name a few.
He composed two playlists for us by the names of ‘Helium’ and ‘Xenon’. Enjoy!
