The melancholic appeal of Blonde Redhead
Music is a big deal for us. Those who’ve visited our flagship store in Rotterdam will have had their ears caressed by the tones of our favorite artists or internet radio shows. One band that’s been with us since the inception of our company is Blonde Redhead. A unique, international power trio operating out of NYC, with roots in Canada, Italy and Japan.
Louis C.K., the funny phenomenon
From fatal nut allergies to soldiers lost in war to slavery… If there’s one thing almost all of us seem to agree on, it’s that these are dark times. And what better way to deal with all of these issues at once, than by sitting down for some good old...
Graanmarkt 13 and its extraordinary vegetable delight
One of the exciting parts of Susan Bijl is that we get to meet and work with inspiring initiatives all over the world. Graanmarkt 13 in Antwerp is one of these meticulously executed concepts that we are very happy to be somewhat related to. The townhouse uniquely and unlikely unites a restaurant, a store, a gallery and an apartment to stay overnight.
Black & White: collections of bags and songs
Earlier this year we asked our followers on Instagram and Facebook about their ‘all time’ favorite SUSAN BIJL colour combination. We have been making our trademark bags for 16 years now, and hundreds of variations have been created over time. We wanted to re-introduce a combination that our fans were really excited to see return in our collection. Ironically, for the colorful company that we are, our most popular combination turned out to be Black And White.

Rock, a hairy history
Isn’t hairstyle the color of rock music? The visual tone by which we can instantly and instinctively identify a group’s musical identity or genre? Often even a characteristic asset of credibility? Here’s an insightful chronology of once controversial coiffures.
The unbearable brightness of colour
Marcus Rothkowitz was a painter, born in Russia whom eventually moved to New York City. Just like so many of his (Jewish) peers did for obvious reasons. He went on to be one of the most famous and legendary modernistic painters of the twentieth century, by then using the alias Mark Rothko.
The amusing environmentalist
In Europe, not many people are acquainted with the work of Carl Hiaasen, writer in Florida. From the early eighties, Hiaasen has worked on a remarkable body of work. His novels always start with a protagonist that is part of some sort of environmentalist group or will become active in such a thing as the story develops. They have a title of two words, take place in Florida and involve criminals. The plots of his books are regularly inspired by detective novels. His work has a resemblance to that of the Coen brothers.
We all love Wes
Isn’t Wes Anderson probably everyone’s favourite filmmaker? His great, unique imagination at least applies to a large chunk of the contemporary cinema crowd. De Texan filmmaker, now in his forties, started out in 1996 with Bottle Rocket – a low budget heist-comedy. It starred Owen & Luke Wilson, who are both in about everything Anderson has put to celluloid since. Martin Scorsese named Bottle Rocket ‘one of the great films of the nineties’ – after that Andersons career exploded.
The craft of comedy
Everybody knows Jerry Seinfeld. Together with Larry David he brought us Seinfeld. Almost 25 years after it first aired, it’s still innovative and deadly funny. A show about nothing? Try a complete, relentless mocking of Western upperclass society of the nineties instead.
The sour taste of health
Taking food seriously is the fastest course to a vast and healthy diet. Minimizing your intake of sugars, fat and all kinds of artificial additives will give you a good chance of leading a life filled with energy. It will probably keep you (and therefore your surroundings) happy, too. Of course – everybody knows this, but it’s not always easy to maintain disciplined. The flesh is only as strong as we allow it to be, in the end.
